Section I

Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences

Written Communication

Two essays and 65 minutes to cover both - how you split the time is your call. Task A argues about society; Task B reflects on the personal. The quotes are a springboard, not a subject.

Section III

Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences

75 questions in 150 min

First-year biology and chemistry, Year 12 physics. Almost every question hands you the information - the work is reasoning with it under time.

Section times are ACER’s published totals. There is no separate reading time in the 2026 booklet: the section time is the whole time, and the practice clock treats it that way.

Section II, actually marked.

ACER publishes what it assesses Written Communication on. That makes it the one thing here that can be marked against a genuinely published standard, rather than against someone's opinion of a good essay.

How it runs

Task A and Task B
A argues about society, B reflects on the personal. Both from a set of quotes, which are a springboard rather than a subject - one of the most common ways a strong writer loses marks.

Section III - Biology

Enzyme kinetics and inhibition

An enzyme was assayed at a fixed enzyme concentration across a range of substrate concentrations, and the initial reaction rate recorded. The experiment was then repeated with a fixed concentration of an added compound Z.

Curve X shows the enzyme alone. Curve Y shows the enzyme in the presence of Z.

Both curves approach the same maximum rate, but Y requires a higher substrate concentration to reach any given rate.

Compound Z is most likely acting as

    a competitive inhibitorCorrect

    Correct. Vmax is unchanged and Km rises - the signature of an inhibitor that competes for the active site and can be outcompeted by excess substrate.

  2. B

    a non-competitive inhibitor

    A non-competitive inhibitor lowers Vmax, because the enzyme it binds is disabled regardless of substrate. Vmax here is unchanged.

  3. C

    an allosteric activator

    An activator would raise the rate, not depress it.

  4. D

    a substrate analogue that is itself turned over

    That would consume enzyme capacity and lower the apparent Vmax.

The working

Read the two parameters off the graph independently. Vmax: both curves plateau at the same height, so maximum turnover is untouched. Km: curve Y needs more substrate to reach half-maximal rate, so apparent Km has risen. Unchanged Vmax with raised Km is competitive inhibition - at saturating substrate the inhibitor is simply outcompeted. This one pairing of parameters is worth memorising, because Section III tests it repeatedly.

Get one wrong and it points at the topic it tested, not just at the mark. There are 42 Section III topics written up with notes and cards, and a wrong answer links straight into the right one.

Where you sit, and how confident anyone can be about it.

Scores alone do not tell you whether you are competitive. Reported outcomes from previous applicants do, roughly - and 'roughly' is the important word.

Your GPA and GAMSAT placed against applicants who reported an offer, and against those who reported a rejection, at each of the 12 universities with enough data to say anything.

It tells you when the sample is too thin
A cohort of eleven reported outcomes cannot support a confident estimate, and the calculator says so rather than producing a percentage that looks like the ones built on hundreds.
Self-reported, not official
Community-sourced applicant outcomes, not GEMSAS or ACER data. Unofficial and directional, and never a substitute for a university's own admissions page.
It cannot see what decides a close call
Preference order, rural status, portfolio, and how strong a given year's field happened to be. A marginal case is decided by things no calculator has access to.
