Section III - Biology
An enzyme was assayed at a fixed enzyme concentration across a range of substrate concentrations, and the initial reaction rate recorded. The experiment was then repeated with a fixed concentration of an added compound Z.
Curve X shows the enzyme alone. Curve Y shows the enzyme in the presence of Z.
Both curves approach the same maximum rate, but Y requires a higher substrate concentration to reach any given rate.

An activator would raise the rate, not depress it.

That would consume enzyme capacity and lower the apparent Vmax.
The working
Read the two parameters off the graph independently. Vmax: both curves plateau at the same height, so maximum turnover is untouched. Km: curve Y needs more substrate to reach half-maximal rate, so apparent Km has risen. Unchanged Vmax with raised Km is competitive inhibition - at saturating substrate the inhibitor is simply outcompeted. This one pairing of parameters is worth memorising, because Section III tests it repeatedly.
Get one wrong and it points at the topic it tested, not just at the mark. There are 42 Section III topics written up with notes and cards, and a wrong answer links straight into the right one.
Scores alone do not tell you whether you are competitive. Reported outcomes from previous applicants do, roughly - and 'roughly' is the important word.
